In a move that could reshape the future of the chemical industries, Russian scientists have succeeded in developing ultra-small smart chips capable of conducting complex chemical reactions within microchannels, promising faster, more accurate production at lower costs, away from traditional massive chemical factories.
Researchers from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Russia announced the development of AI-supported microfluidic chips, representing a new generation of technologies capable of executing chemical reactions within miniature units, in an innovation that could transform manufacturing and scientific research methods.
Julia Gorbunova, the head of the institute, stated in remarks to the Russian news agency “Sputnik” that these chips allow for precise control over reaction factors, such as pressure, temperature, and duration, within microchannels, enabling the production of chemicals and conducting complex analyses more quickly and efficiently, while reducing costs compared to traditional industrial systems.
She explained that the new technology has wide applications, including the development of innovative drugs, the production of chemicals tailored for the oil and agriculture sectors, as well as the manufacturing of advanced materials used in mechanical engineering and aerospace, in addition to providing a precise and safe platform for researchers to conduct complex chemical reactions in a highly controlled environment.
Researchers believe that the significance of this innovation is not limited to miniaturizing chemical laboratories but extends to accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence technologies with miniaturized systems, opening new horizons for the development of more efficient and sustainable industrial and research applications in the coming years.
