لطالما عانى مستخدمو هواتف «آيفون» من كابوس امتلاء مساحة التخزين المجانية على سحابة iCloud، والتي لا تتجاوز 5 غيغابايت تلتهمها صور وتطبيقات الهاتف بسرعة البرق، مما يضع المستخدمين أمام خيار وحيد يتمثل في: الدفع مقابل سعة إضافية.
لكن «واتساب» قرر أخيراً التدخل لكسر احتكار شركة «أبل»، حيث يعمل التطبيق المملوك لشركة «ميتا» على تطوير خدمة نسخ احتياطي سحابية خاصة به ومستقلة تماماً، تمنح مستخدمي آيفون لأول مرة بديلًا مجانياً لحفظ محادثاتهم وبياناتهم دون استهلاك مساحة iCloud.
ووفقاً للتسريبات التي رصدها موقع «WABetaInfo» المتخصص، فإن الخدمة الجديدة ظهرت في النسخة التجريبية لنظام iOS، وستتيح للمستخدم اختيار مكان حفظ نسخته الاحتياطية مباشرة من إعدادات التطبيق.
ولتلبية احتياجات الجميع، تخطط «واتساب» لتوفير عدة باقات تخزينية تنافسية:
- الباقة المجانية: تمنح المستخدم 2 غيغابايت مجاناً بالكامل، وهي مساحة كافية جداً لحفظ النصوص والمحادثات لسنوات.
- الباقة المتوسطة: سعة 50 غيغابايت مقابل اشتراك ضئيل يبلغ نحو 0.99 دولار شهرياً.
- الباقة العملاقة: خطة بسعة 1 تيرابايت يجري العمل عليها حالياً لتناسب أصحاب الوسائط والملفات الضخمة.
الأمان أولاً.. تشفير كامل وتلقائي
الميزة الأقوى في سحابة «واتساب» الجديدة لا تقتصر على توفير المساحة فحسب، بل تمتد إلى مستويات الأمان اللامحدودة.
فخلافاً لـ iCloud التي لا تشفر البيانات بالكامل إلا إذا قام المستخدم بتفعيل ميزة الأمان المتقدمة يدوياً، فإن خدمة «واتساب» الجديدة ستعتمد على التشفير من الطرف إلى الطرف (End-to-End Encryption) بشكل افتراضي وتلقائي.
ولزيادة التحصين، سيستخدم التطبيق «مفتاح مرور» (Passkey) لحماية النسخ الاحتياطية، ولن يتمكن أي طرف (بما في ذلك شركة ميتا نفسها) من الاطلاع على المحادثات، ولن يكون بالإمكان إلغاء هذا التشفير إلا إذا قرر المستخدم العودة لاستخدام سحابة أبل الافتراضية.
وإلى جانب حل أزمة التخزين وتوفير الحماية القصوى، يرى خبراء التقنية أن هذه الخطوة تمهد الطريق لحل معضلة تاريخية تؤرق المستخدمين، وهي تسهيل نقل سجل المحادثات والوسائط بين هواتف آيفون وأندرويد بسلاسة ودون الحاجة لوساطة خدمات «أبل» أو «جوجل».
ورغم أن الميزة لا تزال في طور التجريب المغلق ولم تطلق رسمياً للعامة بعد، إلا أن وصولها المرتقب سيمثل بلا شك نقطة تحول كبرى تحرر مستخدمي آيفون من قيود التخزين الصارمة التي تفرضها أبل منذ سنوات.
iPhone users have long suffered from the nightmare of filling up the free storage space on iCloud, which does not exceed 5 gigabytes, quickly consumed by photos and apps, leaving users with only one option: to pay for additional capacity.
However, WhatsApp has finally decided to intervene to break Apple’s monopoly, as the app owned by Meta is developing its own completely independent cloud backup service, providing iPhone users for the first time with a free alternative to save their chats and data without consuming iCloud space.
According to leaks monitored by the specialized site WABetaInfo, the new service has appeared in the beta version of iOS, and it will allow users to choose where to save their backup directly from the app’s settings.
To meet everyone’s needs, WhatsApp plans to offer several competitive storage packages:
- The free package: gives the user 2 gigabytes completely free, which is more than enough to save texts and chats for years.
- The medium package: 50 gigabytes for a small subscription of about $0.99 per month.
- The giant package: a plan with 1 terabyte of storage currently in development to suit users with large media and files.
Security First.. Full and Automatic Encryption
The strongest feature of the new WhatsApp cloud is not limited to providing space alone, but extends to unlimited security levels.
Unlike iCloud, which does not fully encrypt data unless the user manually activates the advanced security feature, the new WhatsApp service will rely on end-to-end encryption by default and automatically.
To enhance security, the app will use a passkey to protect backups, and no party (including Meta itself) will be able to access the chats, and this encryption can only be revoked if the user decides to return to using Apple’s default cloud.
In addition to solving the storage crisis and providing maximum protection, tech experts believe that this step paves the way to resolve a historical dilemma that has troubled users, which is facilitating the transfer of chat and media history between iPhone and Android phones smoothly and without the need for mediation from Apple or Google services.
Although the feature is still in closed beta testing and has not yet been officially released to the public, its anticipated arrival will undoubtedly represent a major turning point that frees iPhone users from the strict storage constraints imposed by Apple for years.
