The digital platforms are witnessing a rapid transformation in the nature of the relationship between the audience and content creators. The user is no longer just a passive recipient who is content with watching and commenting; they have become an active party who participates in financially supporting the content creator, in a phenomenon that reshapes the concept of interaction in the virtual world.

This support is not limited to expressing admiration or appreciation; it may turn into a means of proving belonging and building a symbolic relationship with the content creator, transcending the boundaries of the screen to touch feelings of loyalty and mutual recognition. This raises questions about the psychological and social motivations behind this spending, and the extent to which digital connections influence financial decisions and individual behavior.

Conversely, financial support has become an important source of income for some content creators, prompting them to innovate more engaging methods for the audience and enhance interaction. This opens the discussion about the dividing lines between legitimate interaction and emotional influence that may lead some users to irrational spending.

These transformations impose the need for greater awareness of the nature of digital relationships, and for an ethical framework that balances the content creator’s right to profit from their production with the user’s right to a digital environment that protects them from exploitation or slipping into spending patterns that exceed their capabilities.

At its core, the phenomenon reveals the transformation of the audience into an influential economic force within the platform economy, and the emergence of new patterns of digital relationships that require a comprehensive reading from the perspective of social psychology, consumer behavior, and digital economy, alongside enhancing awareness and responsibility in dealing with these spaces.

Social Media Specialist: A Mysterious System and Unannounced Mechanisms!

Media professional and social media content specialist Fawaz Al-Malhi explained to “Okaz” that the process of financial support through broadcasting applications, especially “TikTok,” does not seem as simple as some might think; rather, it is governed by unclear mechanisms, possibly directed through certain networks of agents or marketing entities. He points out that the existence of accounts with large numbers of followers without generating any financial returns raises real questions about the fairness of distribution and the mechanism of accessing support.

He adds that the answers provided by some celebrities often reduce the topic to “the love of the audience,” which is an explanation insufficient to understand large financial flows in the absence of clear intellectual content or knowledge production from some of them. He believes that the lack of transparency in explaining profit mechanisms enhances the state of ambiguity and calls for legitimate questions from the perspective of understanding rather than accusation.

From an analytical standpoint, Al-Malhi highlights the increasing questions about how money transitions from virtual currencies within the application to actual bank accounts, and how these large flows pass without raising regulatory questions, emphasizing that these questions need official answers and clear mechanisms.

He also points out that some broadcasts deliberately provoke the audience, followed by legal escalation against critics, which opens a discussion about the role of regulatory bodies in controlling this interaction and preventing platforms from turning into arenas of legal disputes. He emphasizes that appearing in a live broadcast places the individual in the circle of criticism, which necessitates bearing part of the responsibility, with the possibility of developing clearer regulatory mechanisms for complaints.

He concludes that broadcasts are not a completely innocent phenomenon nor are they entirely condemned; rather, they reflect a transformation in the relationship between the audience and the content creator, where the viewer has become a direct funder, in a relationship based on mutual influence and psychological pressure.

A Fertile Environment for Social, Psychological, and Financial Crimes

Regarding potential risks such as money laundering and exploitation, cultural and media communication consultant Dr. Anmar Hamid Mataawe explained to “Okaz” that the risks associated with live broadcasts are no longer mere possibilities; they have become a documented reality, as these platforms have created a fertile environment for three types of crimes: social, psychological, and financial.

He clarified that these crimes include physical harm, collective bullying, and psychological pressure, in addition to exploiting digital gifts in money laundering operations through multiple accounts. He also noted that some platforms have acknowledged the existence of gaps in financial verification systems.

He believes that Arab media has dealt with the phenomenon superficially, either by capitalizing on the fame of content creators or attacking them, without providing a scientific analysis that explains the reasons for the audience’s attraction to this type of broadcasting.

Dr. Mataawe reviews recent studies indicating that financial support has become a means of building social status within the digital community, where individuals seek visibility and recognition, while the content creator is subjected to psychological pressure that sometimes drives them to risky behaviors.

He also refers to tragic incidents linked to live broadcasts, confirming the dangers of public pressure, where the viewer transforms from a recipient to a witness to real tragedies, in a scene that reflects a deep imbalance in the nature of interaction.

He concludes by emphasizing that live broadcasting has become a complex system of psychological, social, and economic pressure, requiring serious media intervention and awareness.

The Legal Framework is Clear… and Violations are Linked to Behavior

Lawyer Ahed Fahd confirmed to “Okaz” that the money paid in live broadcasts in the Kingdom is subject to multiple regulatory frameworks that govern financial transactions and digital behaviors. These transactions do not fall under an independent system but rather within an integrated framework that includes systems for financial fraud, cyber crimes, and e-commerce, alongside the instructions of the Saudi Central Bank and the policies of digital platforms.

She clarified that support in broadcasts is considered a legitimate behavior as long as it is voluntary and clear, but it may acquire an illegitimate description if linked to deception or false claims, or exploiting the feelings of followers, or implying the existence of a non-existent counterpart, or repeated pressure that suggests obligation. This may fall under descriptions such as financial fraud or illicit gain, depending on each case.

She added that digital platforms bear a regulatory role by establishing policies, providing reporting tools, and taking necessary actions against violators. However, the primary responsibility remains with the content provider when a violation is proven.

She pointed out that the description of electronic begging does not apply to all cases of support but is linked to the nature of the behavior. If it is based on misleading solicitation or requesting money without a counterpart, it may be subject to relevant regulations.

She noted that the relevant authorities continue to develop regulatory frameworks and keep pace with digital transformations to enhance transparency, protect users, and raise the level of trust in the digital environment.

A Shift in Values… and the Concept of Gain

Social specialist Abdul Mohsen Mishari Al-Hanan believes that the phenomenon of support in live broadcasts reflects a partial shift in social values, as appreciation has shifted from material production and direct work to digital presence and personal influence. Elements of interaction, entertainment, and visibility now receive financial compensation, indicating a reshaping of the concept of value within society.

Al-Hanan explained to “Okaz” that opinions vary regarding the description of these practices; some see that requesting support directly and repeatedly without providing real content approaches the concept of electronic begging, while others view it as a legitimate economic model based on what is known as the attention economy, where the audience pays for content or interaction they value.

He pointed out that this phenomenon has contributed to changing some individuals’ perceptions of the concept of work, as earning income has become possible outside traditional professional paths. This may open new opportunities, but at the same time, it may reinforce a culture of quick profit and undermine the value of long-term skill development in the absence of balance.

He indicated that the impact of these practices is more pronounced among youth, where some may be driven to imitate this model as an easy path to profit and fame, while it may motivate others to develop their skills in content creation professionally. He emphasized that the challenge lies in the level of awareness, as the pursuit of support may overshadow the focus on education and building the future.

A Search for Quick Fame… and Potential Disorders

Clinical psychology professor Dr. Jamal Al-Tuwairqi explained to “Okaz” that this phenomenon is relatively new and is linked to changes in lifestyle. Some individuals no longer accept the traditional paths taken by their parents and grandparents, which are based on learning, hard work, and patience until achieving success.

He confirmed that fame in the past was the result of long effort and accumulated experiences in various fields, and it was not born out of a moment.

He pointed out that a segment of individuals today seeks to achieve fame as quickly as possible and obtain quick financial returns, which is also reflected in the nature of the content presented in broadcasts. The goal of quick profit intersects between the content creator and some followers, and for some, these methods may be considered a form of intelligence and manipulation.

He explained that some content creators rely heavily on the support segment, even if the accuracy of the information is weak or exaggerated, which is evident in the promotion of certain products, projects, or personalities without sufficient verification of their credibility. He noted that there is a mutual relationship between the merchant and the content creator based on achieving mutual benefit for each party directly. He clarified that some of these behaviors may be linked to psychological backgrounds, such as narcissistic tendencies that drive individuals to exploit others and seek superiority and gains by any means.

He added that some cases involve claiming false scientific or professional attributes to achieve fame, which may expose their holders to accountability and penalties. He noted that some who achieved quick fame later faced psychological and health issues and feelings of regret.

He explained that what is presented through some of these broadcasts often lacks cultural, ethical, and community achievement value, relying instead on superficial comparisons regarding wealth and fame without providing real content that serves society.

He pointed out that some individuals impersonate professional attributes, such as medicine or nutrition, without possessing qualifications, and present content that reaches a wide audience, which calls for more awareness and oversight.

He indicated that there are international efforts to confront these phenomena by tracking practices that exploit individuals financially, healthily, or psychologically without scientific or professional support.

Dr. Al-Tuwairqi concluded by emphasizing the importance of having clear systems and enhancing oversight from relevant authorities to regulate this field, stressing that the absence of references contributes to the spread of negative content that may affect societal ethics and lead some individuals to financial burdens and legal problems.

He confirmed the necessity of treating some of these behaviors as sometimes linked to psychological disorders, such as narcissism, borderline personality, and psychopathy, especially among women, which requires awareness and appropriate treatment.

Emotional Compensation and Proving Existence

Psychological consultant Dr. Khalid Al-Othaymeen believes that the phenomenon of paying money to broadcasting celebrities carries deep psychological dimensions that go beyond being mere entertainment behavior. This behavior reflects a deficiency in the need for appreciation and belonging in some individuals, who seek through support to feel they are part of the circle of the famous or their success.

This may transform over time into a means of proving existence, as it is considered one of the forms of immediate reinforcement due to the mention of the name in front of others and the feelings of attention and appreciation it grants. This may intersect with a sense of control when the celebrity responds to the supporter’s requests, enhancing their feeling of influence as compensation for a lack of impact in reality.

Dr. Al-Othaymeen explained to “Okaz” that this behavior may take on an addictive character for some when it is repeated compulsively, with increasing amounts paid and difficulty in stopping. It is accompanied by feelings of guilt or internal blame.

In other cases, it may represent a form of emotional compensation linked to feelings of loneliness or emptiness or the pursuit of building a virtual social identity. This is measured by its impact on the individual’s life in terms of draining money and time, mental preoccupation, and its effect on family, relationships, and work.

He pointed out that the most affected group by this phenomenon is adolescents and youth, as this stage represents a period of identity formation and self-proving, where individuals seek acceptance and status. This makes the celebrity a ready model for identity and belonging, leading them to merge with and live through a virtual presence for which they may spend what they can and cannot afford, in pursuit of distinction and visibility.

He indicated that protection begins with building digital awareness that enhances the distinction between temporary virtual relationships and real relationships based on balance and mutual benefit, focusing on establishing true sources of self-esteem linked to achievements, skills, and healthy relationships, in addition to helping the individual understand their psychological needs rather than expressing them through impulsive behavior. He added that this phenomenon has implications for self-esteem and real relationships, as individuals may become enamored with the lives of celebrities and compare themselves to them, leading to feelings of inadequacy and distorting their self-image. Their focus, time, and money may shift toward virtual relationships at the expense of their family and social relationships, leading to their weakening or decline.

He concluded by emphasizing that these practices cannot be viewed as transient entertainment behavior; rather, they may indicate psychological needs, defense mechanisms, social emptiness, and emotional deficiencies that require awareness and appropriate treatment.

Digital Amplification and Potential Gaps

A technical expert and specialist in ethical hacking (who preferred not to be named) revealed that the support system relies on complex technical layers, but it remains vulnerable to exploitation attempts, such as amplifying activity through fake accounts or refunding payments.

He pointed out the risks of social engineering, account theft, and exploitation of payment methods, emphasizing that user awareness is the first line of defense.

Opinions of Followers of Live Broadcast Content

Opinions among the audience varied, as Mohammed bin Jaidan Al-Jaidan believes that the motivation may be the search for fame and attention, while Bassam Al-Mutairi considers that the phenomenon reflects a personal deficiency or a desire for attention.

Conversely, Saud Al-Khalidi sees that it may be genuine support in some cases, but it is not without competition.

Salma Saqr provides a deep social reading, considering that the phenomenon reflects “a market for digital illusions,” where social recognition is bought with money. Hala Al-Ghamdi and Sarah Al-Dosari also indicate that the motivations may be emotional or social, emphasizing the importance of awareness in directing this behavior.
